When someone die, they can either be cremated immediately (within a few weeks) or buried first and cremated later. As funerary rites are rather expensive, families can bury their dead and wait months, even year before cremating them.
If the body is to be buried , the body is first ritually washed, taken to the cemetery and buried with rather simple offerings. When the circumstances are right, then the cremation will take place. Final prayers are said, sound offerings of song are made, incense is lit and finally the pyre set alight. The bull goes up quickly in flames and then the tower is burnt
For the Balinese, death rites are one of the most important ceremonies in a person's life. It is the unification of the soul back with the Supreme Being. The return of the five elements to their palace in the world via purification by water and fire.
The Balinese believe that if the soul is not given it's due rituals, it will transform into a small sprite which will bring discord into village life.
